Goals for the Year

My Two Goals:

  1. I want my speeches to mirror the type of person I am, honestly, funny and engaging.
  2. I want to be able to change the pace and pitch to add more emphasizes on certain parts without me explicitly saying their importance.

To have my speeches sound honest and funny as well as being entertaining to my audience the most important thing I can do is be myself and be confident. While doing my research I came across an article that explained people think males with deep voices are more honest. Making sure I do not get too nervous, which could lead to my voice changing, will help me sound more honest cause I have a natural deep voice. In order to be funny during my speech I need to incorporate puns, wordplay and self-deprecation. On top of that, knowing that humor often comes when rewriting your speech. When I edit my speeches I will attempt to add in humor then instead of trying to get lucky on my first try. To be engaging I think the most important thing I can do is be interested in the topic myself. If I am interested in the topic hopefully the audience will be able to see that feel the same.

A good first step in making sure I speaking with the correct pace is shooting for 120 to 160 words in a minute. Considering this is the optimal speed, slowly down and speeding up will be easier to gauge especially while practicing by myself. While trying to control my pitch there are some excises I found in the first article that I can use before my speeches to give me more control. Staying hydrated can also help me gain control of my voice’s pace and pitch.
